Resin Bound vs Tarmac vs Block Paving

An honest comparison of the three most common Irish driveway surfaces.

Which driveway surface is best for an Irish home?

There is no single winner. Resin bound gives the best drainage and looks with a mid to higher cost. Tarmac is the cheapest to lay and quick to install but plainer and prone to cracking. Block paving is hard-wearing and repairable, though it needs the most weeding and re-levelling over time.

Below we set out the real trade-offs so you can pick the surface that suits your budget, your site and how much upkeep you are happy to do.

What affects the cost of each surface?

We never quote a flat rate because every driveway is different. The main cost factors are the size and shape of the area, how much of the old surface has to be dug out and removed, the state of the base underneath, and any edging, drainage or steps involved. Access matters too, as a tight site slows the work.

As a rough guide, tarmac usually carries the lowest supply-and-lay price, block paving sits in the middle because of the labour in laying each block, and quality resin bound tends to be at the upper end. The right way to compare is to get a free quote for the same job, since a cheap base that fails early costs far more than it saves.

How do they compare on durability?

A properly laid resin bound surface over a sound base stays flexible, resists cracking and typically lasts 15 to 25 years. Tarmac can last well but softens in strong sun, scuffs under turning wheels and tends to crack at the edges over time. Block paving is extremely tough and individual blocks take heavy loads, but blocks can sink or lift if the sub-base was not compacted correctly.

What about drainage and SUDS?

This is where the surfaces differ most. Resin bound is porous, so rainwater drains straight through it into the ground. That makes it a SUDS-compliant, permeable option that usually avoids the need for planning permission on a front garden. Standard tarmac and standard block paving are non-permeable, so water runs off them and you may need a soakaway, permeable blocks or a drainage channel to meet the rules. If surface water and puddling are a concern, our resin bound driveways are the strongest choice.

Which needs the least maintenance and weeding?

Resin bound has no joints for weeds to grow through, so an occasional wash keeps it looking well. Tarmac is low effort day to day but shows moss and oil stains and cannot be easily patched invisibly. Block paving looks great but the sand joints are where weeds, moss and ants take hold, so it needs the most regular cleaning and re-sanding. Whatever you have, our driveway and patio cleaning service keeps every surface type in good order.

Which looks best?

Looks are personal, but resin bound offers the widest range of colours and a smooth, seamless finish that suits modern and period homes alike. Block paving gives a traditional, textured look with patterns and borders. Tarmac is the plainest, a clean black finish that does the job without standing out. If a tired existing driveway is the real issue, a professional clean often transforms it, and our softwash and cleaning services are a low-cost first step before you commit to replacing anything.
