Home / Guides / How Often To Clean Your Driveway
A simple guide to timing, the factors that speed up dirt, and why sealing helps.
As a general rule, a full professional clean every 1 to 2 years keeps most Irish driveways looking well. Shaded, damp or north-facing driveways green up faster and often need it yearly, while a sunny, open driveway can go longer. A quick brush and rinse in between clears leaves and stops moss taking hold.
Ireland's damp, mild climate is ideal for algae, moss and lichen, so the biggest factor is how much sun and airflow your driveway gets. A driveway in constant shade under trees or beside a north-facing wall stays wet, and wet surfaces go green quickly. Overhanging trees drop leaves and sap, nearby soil and planting wash silt across the surface, and cars bring in oil, tyre marks and grit. Porous surfaces and jointed block paving trap dirt more readily than smooth ones, which is why they can need attention sooner.
It does. Block paving has sand-filled joints where weeds and moss settle, so it usually needs more frequent cleaning and occasional re-sanding. Tarmac holds oil stains and shows moss along the edges. A well-installed resin bound driveway has no joints and sheds water, so it stays cleaner longer and an occasional wash is often all it needs. Whatever you have, our driveway and patio cleaning service is matched to the surface so it is cleaned thoroughly without damage.
Do not wait for a set date if the driveway is telling you it needs doing. Green or black patches of moss and algae, a slippery feel underfoot after rain, weeds pushing up through joints, and a general dull, grimy look are all signs. Slipperiness in particular is a safety issue, especially near doors and steps, so it is worth acting before winter. Catching growth early also makes each clean quicker and cheaper than letting years of build-up set in.
Cleaning removes the dirt and growth, but the surface underneath is still exposed. Applying a quality sealer after a clean adds a protective layer that helps the driveway resist water, oil and staining, slows down how fast algae and moss return, and makes the next routine clean far easier. On block paving, sealing also helps lock the jointing sand in place so weeds have less chance to take hold. Sealing is not essential on every surface, but on the right one it noticeably extends the time between full cleans and protects your investment.
A brush, a stiff yard broom and the odd rinse are great for upkeep between professional cleans, and we encourage it. Where care is needed is with pressure washers, which can strip jointing sand, scar block paving and wreck softer surfaces if used at the wrong pressure. Delicate areas such as rendered walls and natural stone should never be pressure washed at all and are better treated with our softwash approach. A professional clean every year or two, with your own light upkeep in between, is the balance that keeps a driveway looking its best for the long term.
