How To Remove Moss and Algae From a Driveway

Why it keeps coming back, and how to get rid of it for good.

How do you remove moss and algae from a driveway?

The lasting way to remove moss and algae is to kill it at the root with a professional biocide treatment, then clean the dead growth off and, ideally, seal the surface to slow its return. Simply scraping or jet-washing lifts what you can see but leaves live spores behind, so the green returns within months. Treating it, not just blasting it, is what makes it last.

Why does moss and algae grow on driveways?

Moss, algae and lichen thrive in exactly the conditions Ireland offers: damp, mild and often shaded. Any driveway that stays wet, sits under trees, faces north or gets little sun is a perfect home for them. Spores land, take hold in the tiny pores and joints of the surface, and spread across a season. It is not a sign of a bad driveway, just of our climate, which is why nearly every home here deals with it sooner or later.

Why does DIY jet-washing make moss come back faster?

A hired jet-washer feels satisfying because the green vanishes in front of you, but it only removes the surface layer. The living roots and spores stay in the joints and pores, so the moss regrows, often thicker than before. Worse, high pressure in the wrong hands strips the kiln-dried sand out of block paving joints and can pit or damage the surface, leaving it more open and porous, which is precisely what moss needs to spread faster. Many people find they are back jet-washing again within a few months, damaging the driveway a little more each time.

How does professional treatment kill moss at the root?

Our approach works chemically rather than by brute force. We apply a professional-grade biocide that penetrates the moss, algae and lichen and kills it down to the root, then we clean the surface to lift the dead growth away. Because the spores are killed rather than just displaced, the surface stays clean for far longer than a blast of water on its own. On hard surfaces we combine this with controlled cleaning in our driveway and patio cleaning service, and on delicate or porous surfaces we use low-pressure softwash so nothing is damaged in the process. If you want the detail on the two methods, our guide on softwash versus pressure washing explains when each is used.

How can you stop moss coming back?

Prevention is about denying moss the damp, shaded, porous surface it needs. Keep the driveway clear of leaves and debris that trap moisture, cut back overhanging branches to let light and air in, and make sure water drains away rather than pooling. After a proper clean, re-sanding block paving joints and applying a quality sealer closes up the surface and makes it far harder for spores to take hold. A treated and sealed driveway stays green-free much longer, and a light annual maintenance clean keeps it that way. Our guide on how often to clean your driveway sets out a sensible schedule.

Is it worth calling in a professional?

If the moss is light and you keep on top of it, a gentle wash may hold you for a while. But if it keeps returning, covers a large area, or the surface has become slippery and unsafe, treating it properly is the cheaper choice over time. You stop paying to hire equipment, you avoid slowly damaging the driveway, and you get a result that actually lasts.
