Home / Guides / Is Driveway Sealing Worth It
An honest look at what sealing does, which surfaces benefit, and when to skip it.
For most block paving and imprinted concrete driveways, sealing is worth it. It protects the colour from fading, resists weeds, oil and staining, and makes the surface far easier to clean. It is an extra cost on top of cleaning, but it stretches out the time before the next big clean and keeps the driveway looking fresh, so it usually pays for itself over the years.
A sealer soaks into and coats the surface, closing up the tiny pores where dirt, water and spores would otherwise settle. That does several things at once. It locks in the colour and slows the fading that sun and weather cause, it stops oil, rust and general staining from soaking in, and it strengthens the joints between blocks so weeds and moss find it much harder to take hold. Day to day, the biggest benefit people notice is that a sealed driveway simply cleans up faster and stays looking good for longer between washes.
Block paving gets the most out of sealing. Combined with fresh kiln-dried sand in the joints, a sealer locks the blocks together, keeps weeds down and holds the colour. Imprinted or pattern-imprinted concrete is the other big one, because its whole appeal is the printed colour and pattern, and sealing is what keeps that finish sharp rather than dull and grey. Some natural stone and concrete surfaces benefit too. Tarmac generally does not need a conventional sealer, and resin bound surfaces are designed to perform without one, which is one of the advantages we cover in our surface comparison guide. If you are considering a new driveway, our resin bound installation service is worth a look.
As a rough guide, a good sealer on a driveway lasts a few years before it needs refreshing, though the exact life depends on the product, the surface and how much traffic and weather it takes. A driveway with cars turning on it daily wears faster than a lightly used one. The key point is that sealing is not permanent, it is maintenance. It should always go onto a properly cleaned and dry surface, because sealing over dirt or moss just traps the problem underneath, which is why we only seal as part of, or straight after, a proper driveway and patio clean.
Sealing is not always the right call. If a driveway is badly broken up, sinking or near the end of its life, sealing is money spent on a surface that needs replacing, not protecting. It adds little to a plain tarmac drive or a resin bound surface. And if you genuinely do not mind a more frequent maintenance clean, you can skip it and simply wash the driveway more often instead. We will always tell you honestly when we think sealing is not worth it for your situation rather than adding it for the sake of it.
If you have block paving or imprinted concrete in reasonable condition and you want it to stay colourful, weed-free and easy to keep clean, sealing is usually a sound investment. If your surface is worn out or the type that does not need it, your money is better spent elsewhere. The honest answer depends on your specific driveway, so the best step is to have us look at it.
